Rock Climbing

“How to get the best of it all? One must conquer, achieve, get to the top; one must know the end to be convinced that one can win the end . . . Is this the summit, crowning the day? How cool and quiet! We’re not exultant; but delighted, joyful; soberly astonished. . . Have we vanquished an enemy? None but ourselves. Have we gained success? That word means nothing here. Have we won a kingdom? No. . . and yes. We have achieved an ultimate satisfaction. . . fulfilled a destiny. . . To struggle and to understand – never this last without the other; such is the law. . .” George Mallory, Climbing Everest

Climbing Day / Multipich Route on LIMESTONE

Its natural proclivity to chip and erode produces natural footholds and handholds; its relative density makes it an excellent surface for scaling and staking anchors. Climbing on limestone requires a closer look of the surface to understand where the best possible route goes...for many this is the ultimate and ideal kind of climbing.
The Grigne Massif just above Lecco is definitely the place you want to go for a day trip. Several classic alpine climbs from the easiest scrambles to severes steep faces with long sport routes are just waiting outside your door.
Otherwise just within few hours driving we reach Arco and Finale Ligure – the 2 italian top sport climbing areas – or the best climbing spots in the Dolomites. Starting from 90€ p/p.
Climbing Day / Multipich Route on Granite
Because of its hardness, granite often forms large rock masses which are weathered by wind, rain, snow, and ice into mountains, cliffs, and domes. Weaknesses in granite that erosion attacks are generally vertical joints which widen into cracks, so many of the best crack climbs are found on this cliffs. Otherwise granite teaches how to stay perfectly balanced on our feet during slab climbing.
Just in the end of the Lake, we find one of the best world spots for this kind of rock. Val di Mello/Val Masino massif is an important and historic alpine rock climbing area encompassing several sub valleys which are well served by alpine huts. Val di Mello is the lower, “new age” climbing side with several types of climbs embedded in a stunning natural reserve. The upper side of Val Masino is south facing and has relatively simple approaches to the climbs which are usually completely free of snow by mid summer. Most of the mountain routes are between 2000mt and 3000mt. Some of the best alpine granite climbing in Europe is situated in this area. The rock is superb and often weathered into fins and flutings which enable unlikely looking faces to be climbed at moderate grades.
Switzerland also offer amazing spots, all of them very easy to access in a daytrip from Como. From the warm and friendly Locarno area, to the spectacular spikes in Uri til the more demanding climbs around Grimsel and Furkapass. Starting from 70€ p/p.
